Sophie Walbeoffe

Born in South Devon in 1961, Sophie studied Fine Art in London at Wimbledon School of Art where she obtained a BA Hons degree and she has worked as a full-time painter ever since.

She has travelled extensively over the course of her career. A trip to Canada in 1984 enabled her to study for six months with Sybil Andrews on Vancouver Island.

In 1987 she went to Dubai to paint the desert people and travelled back overland painting in Jordan, Petra and Egypt.

In September l988 Sophie joined Operation Raleigh as the official artist on an expedition to Kenya and painted the local scenes and portraits of Samburu and Turkana nomads, as well as painting Wilfred Thesiger - probably Britain's most intrepid nomad.

Since 1991 Sophie has been living and painting in both Kenya and England. In 2001, she was invited to be the expedition artist for Tom Whittaker's climb up Mount Kilmanjaro as part of his "Seven Summits" expedition.

A period from 2002 - 2005 saw Sophie being attracted back to the souks, spices and the exotic world of the Middle East where she spent several months painting in the deserts of Oman and the Gulf. This was followed by a successful exhibition in Dubai 2005.

Overall, however, it is the timelessness of Kenya, the people and the landscape that attract her most. Since April 2006 she has been appointed as an artist for The International Committee of the Red Cross covering the Horn of Africa. She returns to paint in England and Europe as often as she can as she enjoys the challenge of the contrasting landscapes.
