LINCOLN SELIGMAN, was born in London in 1950. He read law at Oxford and worked in the city and Hong Kong as a shipping lawyer for six years before jumping ship in 1980 to become a full time painter and sculptor. He rapidly developed an international reputation in the field of large scale site specific murals, mobiles and abstract installation pieces for atrium spaces. These spectacular works in bronze, steel, glass and high tensile fabrics can be seen in many high profile landmark buildings around the world, mainly in Europe, Hong Kong and China. His most recent commission is a series of giant hanging sculptures in Phoenix City, central Beijing, for the Chinese government.
Recently he has designed stage sets, based on his kinetic sculptures, for New English Ballet Theatre. These were premiered at Covent Garden in October 2013. They will enjoy a second run at Sadlers Wells in July 2014.
When not creating large scale sculptures he devotes his time to figurative paintings, mainly emanating from his extensive travels around the world - particularly India, Sri Lanka, Africa and Asia. Standard Chartered Bank sponsored his one man exhibition of paintings at the Royal Academy in 2007. His most recent exhibition was at Gerald Bland, Madison Avenue, New York in 2013.
His work is well known for its use of vibrant colour and form, encompassing landscapes, racing, wine paintings and a by now well known collection of enigmatic backview 'portraits', often involving turbaned heads, cardinals, monks and maharajas.
He has acted as a selector for the annual Discerning Eye exhibition At the Mall Galleries, sponsored by ING.
His paintings and sculptures can be found in many important collections, including:
